Postnatal Depression

The birth of a new baby can be a time of great joy for most families but can also be a difficult time of change. Learning to adapt and the loss of independence can lead to new challenges for both mother and her family. Some women experience depressed mood, agitation, anxiety and anger or feel unable to cope. These symptoms are not uncommon and help is available.

Our inpatient therapy programs are structured yet flexible enough to meet individual needs. Treatment is based on a personalised, holistic and comprehensive treatment model incorporating individual, medical and group therapy. From individual counselling to group therapy, our care is delivered in a variety of settings and uses a range of therapeutic models including cognitive behavioural therapy, group and individual psychotherapy and skills development.

A Day Program is available for individuals who require treatment without hospitalisation or those who may require transitional care following an inpatient stay.

Key elements of the program are:
  • Managing depression and anxiety
  • Stress management and relaxation
  • Communication skills, problem solving and time management
  • Mother/infant relationship enhancement
  • Recognition of normal developmental milestones
  • Self esteem improvement
  • Exploring social networks
  • Setting realistic goals and expectations
The Outreach Program also provides mental health treatment through individual visits conducted in the home or community.

An appropriate treatment option can be decided by you in consultation with your doctor.
